Not a Rider, Not a Problem!

Here at ReeLee, we want to give anyone and everyone the opportunity to ease the load that life puts on you by spending time with horses.  You do not need to be a rider.  This is not therapy, so no need to pour your heart out to another person, or pull out your health insurance.  Whether you want to contemplate life while grooming, or learn about how horses respond to our energy and body language, we have various experiences that will have you walking away hopefully feeling a little lighter and a bit more confident.

Guided Grooming

After a lesson on safety, and instructions on grooming equipment, participants will be able to interact with their assigned horse at their leisure. Take selfies, run your hands through their mane, and lean into their calm nature. Each participant will also be guided and supervised to learn how to pick up and handle the horse's feet. A rewarding experience, as by lifting a hoof, you are taking the ability to flee away from a flight animal. This requires the horse to have trust in you. At the end of each session, participants will have the opportunity to give treats to horses in a process called Carrot Stretches. Asking their horses to bend and stretch to receive a reward!

Horse Walks

 After a lesson on safety, participants will be given 15 or so minutes to groom and get to know their horse. After which, participants will make their way to our outdoor arena to learn about basic body language to be able to lead and control the horse from the ground. They will learn about establishing boundaries, asking for and getting appropriate responses to cues, and how to maneuver and guide their horse around others effectively. By the end of the session, participants will have the choice to either walk their horse through obstacles in the arena, or go for a short walk with their horse in the woods.

Round Pen Workshops

After a safety overview and introduction to their horse in the barn, participants will go to the Round Pen for a demonstration of Join Up, followed by taking part in the exercise themselves.

Join Up starts with the horse loose in the Round Pen.  The human will then use their body language, and energy to direct the horse through various paces and directions without physical contact. These actions establish the human as the horse's leader. The horse will then begin to show signs that it wants to Join Up, such as licking and chewing, and a more relaxed posture with their head lowered. At this time, the human will create an invitation to the horse to Join Up by taking on a more passive posture, and moving away.  If the horse accepts the invitation to Join Up, it will walk to the human freely.  Once Join Up is complete, the horse will follow the human throughout the pen with no line or tether, signaling that they trust them, and a bond has been established.
